Cornelia "Fly Rod" Crosby's Fall Adventure

In the High Peaks and Rangeley Lakes Regions of Maine
October 2012

Escape to Cornelia “Fly Rod” Crosby country, where in the late 1800s, Fly Rod hiked, fished, guided and became an outdoor sports pioneer for women. She was Maine’s first registered guide, set records for fly fishing (52 caught in 44 minutes) and was such an accurate “markswoman” that she and Annie Oakley met and became lifelong friends.

Join Adventure Director Patty Geiger and follow in Fly Rod’s legendary footsteps.  Go “tramping” in the Maine woods and reap the fun and health benefits she promoted … fresh air, exercise, relaxation, good food and good friends experienced in a beautiful, outdoors environment, and in October, surrounded by a panorama of fall color.

You’ll stay at the Star Barn B & B, tucked away in an area known for its scenic Maine wilderness. The Star Barn offers a sampling of what it must have felt like to be a “rusticator” in the 1800s.  Rusticators were the prosperous vacationers who came to Maine to experience outdoor recreation and “healthful air.” Grand hotels and rustic camps, complete with all the comforts, were built to accommodate them.

Today you can hike, fish, rock climb, ski, kayak or canoe, and snowshoe, all within a few miles, and then return to your Star Barn “camp” and know that tea, coffee and cookies will be waiting for you along with a hot shower.  Innkeepers Ginni and David Robie welcome each guest with warm hospitality and offer their extensive knowledge about the High Peaks and Rangeley Lakes regions.

Fly Rod Crosby Adventure package includes:

  • Women in the Outdoors Wine & Cheese Party at Patty’s—you’ll get all the information you need for the trip.
  • Three nights at the Star Barn B & B, www.starbarnbandb.com, built on the footprint of an early 1800s barn. Enjoy rustic luxury--country antiques, wood-burning fireplace, private baths and views from every window.

What you need to know:

  • Clothing and outdoor gear—To make certain that everyone will be comfortable during an October visit to Maine, Patty will be sending information about how to dress for your adventure or join Patty for a Women in the Outdoors Wine & Cheese Party.  You will only need a few basic items of clothing to ensure staying warm and dry.
  • WiFi and cell phones—Leave work and distractions behind—you’ll be truly “getting away from it all.”  As with many rural areas in Maine, part of the charm is being in a secluded location that is out of cell-phone range and offers only dial-up internet access, allowing you to regain your focus and relax during our time together.
  • Transfers from Portland International Airport to the Star Barn B & B, 956 Reeds Mill Rd., Madrid, Maine—On Thursday, Oct. 13, Patty will meet you at the airport.  Since it is a two-hour drive to the B & B and depending on the flight arrival times for the group, you may have “down” time in the airport which includes a gift shop and restaurant.  Bring along a good book, too—just in case of delays!  Once the individual arrival and departure times are determined, Patty will be able to plan for the most efficient transfer process.
  • You will need to make your own airline reservation to arrive at Portland International Airport on Thursday, Oct. 13.  If possible, mid-morning through early/mid-afternoon arrivals and departures are preferred to accommodate transfers to and from the Star Barn B & B.  Patty will be happy to advise you about your travel plans to Portland.  Once you arrive, Patty will meet you aand transfer you and your luggage—hassle free—to and from the Star Barn.  The package includes transportation from and to the airport, food, lodging and adventure activities. A deposit will be required: $175 made payable to the Star Barn B & B.
  • Please reserve by September 15 to accommodate planning.
  • Cancellation policy—The deposit will be returned in full up to two weeks prior to the arrival date. Up to one week before, 50 percent will be returned, and one week or less, it will be returned if the room can be filled. Visit www.STARBARNBANDB.com for more information about the inn.

Package price for three-night stay, $699; four-night stay, $798, including transportation to and from Portland International Airport. Taxes and gratuities are additional.

Please give Patty a call 614-325-6178 or send an email patty@steppingupandout.com and she’ll be happy to answer your questions!
